The Dog and Pheasant – Brook, Surrey…
The Dog and Pheasant is a 15th Century Medieval Coaching Inn, full of black oak beams and, of course, character. Yes, Medieval, it’s that old. Medieval conjures up many images, knights and the horses with curtains around them, banquets, maypole dancing and maybe even three-field crop rotation.
This Medieval pub, however, is a cosy place that prides itself on its food, and rightly so. It specialises in using local ingredients in its food and locally sourced beers. As soon as you look at the menu you can tell the Dog and Pheasant is a pub that takes its food extremely seriously.

Key Points

The Well-Stocked Bar
As usual on these reviews, we were not paid to do it, we paid for our own food and drink out of our own pockets and the staff had no idea we were reviewing! Therefore, I feel our review is exactly as you would experience when visiting the pub.
A Well-Stocked Bar
Upon arriving you are greeted by an extremely well-stocked bar, with surprisingly, many local offerings. Silent Pool Gin, Nyetimber wine and Hogs Back ales are all on offer. Being a free house, the choice is not limited by the brewery so the range of beers wines and spirits are excellent!
The wine list alone has nearly 40 different wines! Also, there are smaller craft type ales on offer from the likes of the Dorking Brewery, Hammerpot from Sussex and Sharps from Cornwall.

The bar area has a few stools if you are just stopping by for a pint. This might seem a strange thing, going to a pub known for its great food just to go for a drink but remember this is the UK. The pub in England is, generally, the centre of the village. Also, another general rule is that as a nation, we drink more than the USA (11.6 litres per year as opposed to 9.2).
I, of course, have a personal theory about this. We used to have a lot of Puritans in England but at a point in the beginning of the 1600’s, we put a lot of the Puritans on ships and set them off from Plymouth. I wonder what happened to them? But, those that were left, enjoyed a drink.

Dining Areas
As you would expect from such an old building, the ceilings and doorways can be low and as a result of this, do mind your head. There are several seating areas, some downstairs and some upstairs. Another Medieval image conjured up is huge joints of meat being slowly roasted in big fireplaces.
Well, you’re in luck, almost! Wednesday night is Grill night and, in short, you can watch the chef cook your steaks and fish on the big inglenook fireplace in the dining area downstairs! No throwing the bones over your shoulder for the dogs, though!

Great Menu Choice
The menu choice is excellent and even some special things are available if pre-ordered – like chateaubriand. All the beef is sourced locally and is, predominantly, Aberdeen Angus which is a good bit of beef. Also, prawns, scallops and even a fish of the day all feature, on what is, a truly excellent menu.

Covered stairs up to another dining area
Free wifi is available and we found the speeds to be surprisingly excellent given the location. We achieved speeds consistently of over 35 MB/s. There are so many reasons to go to the Dog and Pheasant, it’s just a case of picking one and heading there!
