La Rioja.
A few of my favourite photos from the La Rioja region of Spain. If you like red wine, La Rioja would be a must-see. La Rioja is in the north of Spain an hours drive south of Bilbao. Flights are regular from the UK and surrounding countries.
La Rioja
Also, Frank Gehry’s Marquis de Riscal hotel is an architectural marvel. If you do fly into Bilbao, also check out his architecture at the Guggenheim Museum It is in the city on the banks of the river.
The wineries/bodegas in the region are stunning and well worth a visit. Some are olde worlde, some new modern architectural masterpieces. My visit Rioja section can be found here.
To get from Bilbao to Rioja we used Avis rent a car. It was a painless process and enabled us to earn some Avios points too.
La Rioja Food and Drink
As you would expect, the food is good, authentically Spanish and honest. Restaurants were of varying quality and style but never once were we massively disappointed. Because of siesta time, they open later in the evening than you would expect. Conversely, they stay open later too. I tend to have some trouble in many places as I don’t eat cheese or tomatoes. However, I found that there was always something on the menu to satisfy me.
To be sure, the main point in going for us was the wine. I drink all sorts of wine but my main preference is red. Tam, my other half is a white drinker primarily. Luckily we found most wineries grow a white option. The region is undoubtedly, a red wine region.
Temperatures can vary greatly depending on the time of year. It gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter, so dress accordingly.
