The Swan Fittleworth.

The earliest parts of The Swan Fittleworth, date from 1382 but it is believed that an earlier Saxon building stood here. The Swan became a coaching Inn in 1536, offering rooms and a change of horses on the route from London . Undoubtedly, history just seems to ooze from its very fabric. Situated in the sleepy village of Fittleworth, the Swan is a great addition to my Historic Pubs of Sussex.

As usual on these reviews, we were not paid to do it, we paid for our own food and drink out of our own pockets and the staff had no idea we were reviewing! Therefore, I feel our review is exactly as you would experience when visiting the pub.

The Swan Fittleworth

Food

The Swan Fittleworth has a reputation for generous portion sizes and good food using local ingredients where possible. Also, It is reasonably priced for the area considering they are the only pub for some distance. It has recently changed ownership (summer 2018) and the new owners seem to be doing this great little pub justice. Menus change, of course, but the menu is available on the pubs’ website. The link is at bottom of the page.

The Swan Fittleworth, as you would expect, stocks a wide range of drinks. Indeed, the wine list has something to suit everyone. However, and this is just personal taste, I found the bar to be slightly out of character with the rest of the pub. Of course, it still works in the way it should and the drinks are dispensed with alacrity.

The Swan Fittleworth has had its famous share of visitors over the years, including The Artist Constable, the Composer Elgar and the Writer Rudyard Kipling. Also, the decor alludes to some of these famous visitors. and it’s a nice touch.

Also, the Swan has a great beer garden in which to sit and enjoy the quiet village idyll. It is a great place to sit on a summers day, to be sure.

The Swan also is a hotel with an impressive 4 out of 5 on TripAdvisor. The rooms, surprisingly, are a reasonable rate for the area. But, if you want to book it as a stopover for the nearby Goodwood Festival of Speed weekend, it’s best to book early to avoid disappointment!

The Swan Fittleworth is a great way to while away an afternoon or an evening.

To reiterate, I don’t do paid reviews and I only include pubs that have something notable about them. However, If you know a pub that you think would make a good addition to this list, for historical or quirky reasons, leave a comment below in the ‘Post a Comment‘ section right at the bottom of the page. If it looks interesting, I will do one of my stealth visits and the review will be posted here. Not every pub makes the cut – perhaps three quarters do for various reasons. And the various reasons for a pub not making the cut are; bad service, bad food, bad experience and just plain boring..!
